Retina Research Innovation Program

Enhancing retinal detachment repair: We have enhanced techniques for a minimally invasive alternative to vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachment, called pneumatic retinopexy, leading the first randomized controlled trial comparing procedures. We found that patients receiving our less invasive procedure not only had a speedier recovery, but also a better visual outcome one year later. Developing individualized treatment regimens: Patients with conditions such as diabetic macular edema, age related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion require intravitreal injections --- with some needing treatment monthly and other less often. We are currently leading research to determine how to predict the level of response to medication and the ideal frequency of care, enabling us to individualize treatment.
