The Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education is proud to provide a comprehensive awards program for our Varsity Blues student-athletes. General and team-specific awards support outstanding student-athletes from faculties and divisions across all three U of T campuses, based on specifications set out by the OUA and USPORTS.

Friends of Blues Women's Volleyball Award

Award to a student-athlete on the basis of excellence in athletics, preferably women’s volleyball and academic standing.

Varsity Blues Men’s Soccer Award of Merit

The award will be made to a student or students on the basis of athletic excellence, preferably in men's soccer and demonstrated leadership.

Maynard Captains' Awards

Donated by Jock Maynard in honour of his father John Maynard, the awards are given to one male captain (preferably football) and one female captain who demonstrate academic achievement, excellence in athletics and qualities of leadership as evidenced by being selected by teammates as a team captain.

Ron Kimel Men's Basketball Award

Established by friends of Ron Kimel on the occasion of his 60th birthday, this is awarded to a Varsity student-athlete on the basis of excellence in athletics, preferably men’s basketball.

Dr Ronald Sternberg Basketball Award of Merit

Established in memory of men's basketball alumnus, Ronald Sternberg, the award is given to a student-athlete with strong leadership skills and athletic talent, particularly on the basketball court.

Maitre Ken Wood Fencing Award

This award was established in 2004 by friends and former athletes in honour of Maitre Ken Wood and his 40 years of commitment and leadership to fencing at the University. The award is presented to a student who excels in athletics, preferably in fencing, and who also contributes to the advancement of the fencing program.

Liz Hoffman Women's Field Hockey Award

Named after Liz Hoffman, a U of T championship field hockey coach and former Director of Athletics, the award is given to a student on the basis of excellence in athletics, preferably Varsity women’s field hockey.

Roy McMurtry Football Award of Merit

Named after the Honourable Roy McMurtry (5T4), Chief Justice of Ontario from 1996-2007, this award was established by the Friends of Football to commemorate his outstanding contribution to football, as a member of the Varsity Blues football team and CEO of the Canadian Football League. The award is made to a student on the basis of excellence in athletics, preferably football, and demonstrated leadership qualities.

Leilani Nolan DeVuono - "Love for Lacrosse" Memorial Award

Established in memory of women's lacrosse alumna Leilani Nolan DeVuono, this award is given to a young woman with academic merit who has proven athletic excellence, preferably in the sport of lacrosse.

Dan Thompson Swim Award

The Dan Thompson Swim Award is given on the basis of academic merit and excellence in athletics, preferably swimming.

Fred Foot Award

Established by Dean Bruce Kidd, alumni and friends of the Varsity Blues track team in memory of former coach Fred Foot. The award is given to a student who has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, excellence in academics and athletics, demonstrated the qualities of leadership, excellence in academics and athletics, preferably track.

Tom Longboat Award

To be awarded preferably to an indigenous student at the University of Toronto who is a long distance runner on the intercollegiate Track and Field team. Tom Longboat (1887-1949) was one of Canada’s greatest marathon runners prior to World War I. He was an Onandoagan from Ohsweken, Ontario who dominated long distance races between 1906 and 1912.

Orest Stanko Men's Volleyball Award of Merit

Awarded to a Varsity student-athlete on the basis of academic merit and excellence in athletics, preferably men’s volleyball. The award was established in recognition of Orest Stanko, who coached the men's volleyball team for 23 years and is the winningest coach in the OUA men's volleyball history.

Eli Drakich Memorial Award

Established in honour of Eli Drakich, and awarded annually based on athletic and academic excellence, preferably to a women's volleyball player. Eli’s passion for the sport of volleyball, particularly at U of T, was prevalent throughout many years of his life. He volunteered his time and served as an assistant coach for the women's and men's Varsity Blues programs from 1981 – 1996.
