The Dr. Earl Shuman Memorial Fund for Health Journalism
Initiated by Dr. Shuman’s family and Canadians for Properly Built Homes (CPBH), The Dr. Earl Shuman Memorial Fund for Health Journalism at the University of Toronto supports investigative journalism students with a focus on public health and related cross-disciplines. Under the guidance of journalist and instructor Rob Cribb, this fund exists to contribute to the sharing of information to the public through investigative journalism work. The fund supports the protection of consumers in many different ways including the potential impact on health of violations to policies and codes. This fund embodies Dr. Shuman’s passionate advocacy for accountability and transparency to ensure that the public has adequate information and access to consumer protection, which was born after challenging experiences with a newly-built home. Earl believed that the critical role of journalists and the media was to ‘write’ the wrongs, to inform the public, and engage authorities. Supporters of this fund carry forward this important work in Dr. Shuman’s memory.
