Faculty of Arts & Science
Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures
Studying German offers a fascinating introduction to a European culture whose writers, artists, scientists and thinkers have been influential in shaping the course of Western civilization. With the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, the unification of Germany, and the drive for greater integration of the member countries of the European Union (EU), Germany is becoming even more politically and economically important. Canada's oldest and largest German department is highly regarded for its strengths in literary and intellectual history, while German and Yiddish philology and linguistics, literary theory, culture and society round out an impressive range of scholarly pursuits that students can explore. Your gift will support young scholars of Germanic languages and literatures.
